Photoshop and Gimp are two of the most popular photo editing programs available, and they’re both excellent for designing custom car decals. Here’s how to make them in both programs:
Open Photoshop or Gimp. You’ll need an image editing program to create your design. You can download either Photoshop or Gimp for free online. Once you have it installed, open it on your desktop.
Create a new document. In Photoshop, click the “File” menu and select “New,” then choose your dimensions. Most car decals will be rectangular, so use the “Width” and “Height” sliders to choose the size of your document (keep in mind that this is not the size of your final decal). In Gimp, click “File” and “New,” then give your file a name before clicking “OK.”
Select a background color for your design. This color will show through any transparent areas in your design. As such, you should select either white or the color of your vehicle.
You can make custom decals for your car using a program like Photoshop or GIMP, but don’t expect to do so overnight. The process is a bit involved and will take several hours over the course of a couple of days. But if you want a design you made to be on your vehicle, this is one way to get it there.
Here’s what you need:

Vinyl paper that’s compatible with your inkjet printer and suitable for outdoor use (if you plan on putting your decal outside). For this guide, I’m using a pack of 10 Avery Sticker Project Paper sheets from Amazon for about $10USD.
